Star Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant will not be the captain of the Delhi Capitals in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL). A report from the Times of India on October 17 says the team is looking for a new captain, with all-rounder Axar Patel as a possible replacement. Pant has been the captain since 2021.

According to the report, "Yes, the Delhi Capitals could be looking for a new captain. There are chances that India all-rounder Axar Patel may take over as the new captain, or the franchise could be eyeing someone who is captaincy material at the IPL auction (likely to take place overseas in mid-November).” However, Pant will still be the team's top player, as the leadership feels he would perform better without the stress of captaincy.

Pant has been with the Delhi Capitals since 2016 and is the player with the most appearances for the franchise. He also holds the record for the most runs scored for the team in the IPL. Pant became captain in 2021 after Shreyas Iyer got injured during a series against England.

In Pant's first season as captain, the team finished at the top of the points table but lost both qualifier matches, failing to reach the final. He was retained for ₹16 crore before the IPL 2022 auctions and led the team again, but they finished fifth that year. Pant missed the 2023 season due to injuries from a car accident but returned as captain in 2024, finishing as the top run-scorer, though the team again failed to make the playoffs.

It has also been reported that the Delhi Capitals want to bring back Shreyas Iyer if he is released by KKR before the 2025 mega auction. Iyer led the Capitals to the IPL final in 2020 and won the title with KKR in 2024.
