Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress General Secretary, took oath as a Lok Sabha MP on Thursday after winning from Wayanad, Kerala. She wore a Kerala Kasavu saree, an off-white saree with a gold border, commonly worn during Malayali celebrations, signaling her connection to Wayanad.

At 52, Priyanka took the oath holding a copy of the Constitution in the presence of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and other MPs. Her husband Robert Vadra, their children, and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge watched from the gallery.

This marks the first time in decades that three members of the Gandhi family are in Parliament. Priyanka and her brother Rahul Gandhi are in the Lok Sabha, while their mother Sonia Gandhi is in the Rajya Sabha, as she chose not to contest from Raebareli in the 2024 elections. Priyanka also became the third woman in her family, after Sonia Gandhi and Indira Gandhi, to serve as an MP.

Priyanka contested from Wayanad after Rahul Gandhi, who won both Wayanad and Raebareli, chose to retain Raebareli. She won with 6.22 lakh votes, defeating her CPM rival Sathyan Mokeri by over four lakh votes, a larger margin than Rahul's in 2019.

After her victory, Priyanka expressed her gratitude and promised to represent Wayanad's people effectively. She tweeted, "I look forward to being your voice in Parliament and fighting for your hopes and dreams."

Rahul Gandhi previously held Wayanad twice, winning 6.47 lakh votes in 2024 with a margin of 3.64 lakh votes.

Apart from Priyanka, Congress leader Ravindra Chavan also took oath as an MP after winning a bypoll in Nanded.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's Political Journey
Priyanka entered politics in 2019 as Congress General Secretary for eastern Uttar Pradesh and later took charge of the entire state. While the party struggled in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, she played a significant role in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Under her leadership, the Congress-led INDIA bloc won 43 out of 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh, limiting BJP’s tally below the majority mark in the Lok Sabha. She also helped secure wins in key constituencies like Raebareli and Amethi, defeating prominent BJP leaders.
