Five security personnel were killed, and dozens, including police officers, were injured as supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan marched toward Islamabad in Pakistan. The protest began on Sunday and continued into Tuesday, with demonstrators clashing with police and security forces. The government deployed the army in the capital to control the situation.
The march, led by Khan's wife, Bushra Bibi, reached Islamabad by Monday evening. On Tuesday, protesters resumed their march toward D-Chowk, an area near key government buildings, where they planned to gather. Clashes erupted along the way, involving violence, attacks on police, and vehicles being set on fire.
According to reports, one police officer was shot dead, and four security personnel were killed when protesters ran them over with a vehicle. Over 100 others, including police officers, were injured in the violence. Protesters used heavy machinery to remove roadblocks set up by the government to stop them.
Imran Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, had called for nationwide protests, claiming the current government had "stolen the mandate" in the 2022 elections. Protesters were urged to march to Islamabad to challenge what they called oppression.
The government tried to negotiate with the PTI to hold the protest at a different location, but Bushra Bibi insisted on moving toward D-Chowk. The Interior Minister has warned the protesters of severe consequences if they enter the high-security zone.
Imran Khan has been jailed since 2022, facing numerous legal cases. Despite this, his party won the most seats in the February elections. He accuses the ruling coalition of unfairly seizing power.
