Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are expected to part ways with their captain, KL Rahul, after a disappointing IPL 2024 season where he couldn't lead the team to the playoffs. Rahul has been an important player for LSG since they started in 2022, but after three seasons with mixed results, he is unlikely to be kept on the team. Although he helped LSG qualify for the playoffs twice, his recent performance has not been strong, and the management wants to take a different approach.
Sources say that LSG's management has discussed Rahul’s future multiple times and agreed to let him go. One source said, "We have talked about KL’s role with the team, and we have decided to move forward without him."
As one of the most experienced Indian batsmen in the league, Rahul is expected to be a big name in the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction. His strike rate has been a concern; he scored 616 runs in 2022 at a strike rate of 135.38, but his performance dropped in the following season to a strike rate of 113.22. In the 2024 season, he managed 520 runs with a strike rate of 136.13, but a mid-season injury in 2023 raised questions about his consistency.
Nicholas Pooran, who acted as the team’s stand-in captain during one match last season, is likely to be kept on the team. The West Indian wicketkeeper-batsman played a vital role in the middle order and helped stabilize the batting lineup. LSG is reportedly willing to retain Pooran at a high price due to his importance to the team.
Even though they are letting KL Rahul go, there is speculation that LSG might try to bid for him again at the auction, possibly at a more reasonable price. Rahul’s experience and leadership could still be valuable if they can secure him for a better deal.
The official list of players who will be retained will be announced by October 31, and fans are looking forward to seeing LSG’s plans for the next season.
