Josh Inglis believes he can succeed at the Test level if given the chance, but right now, he is focused on scoring as many runs as possible after a strong start to the season.
There is growing interest in having Inglis join Australia's team for a five-match series against India, especially after he scored two centuries and was named player of the match in back-to-back games for Western Australia. New South Wales coach Greg Shipperd has been one of the people supporting his selection.
Before Australia’s first one-day international match against Pakistan at the MCG, Inglis expressed confidence in his ability to perform well if he gets picked for his Test debut. He said, “I’ll always back myself, but that decision is out of my hands. All I can do is make runs and put up good performances, and we’ll see where that goes.” He enjoys putting pressure on bowlers and is happy with how he’s started the year.
Shipperd mentioned that Inglis could take the opening batting spot for Australia, even though he hasn't played there before. He said, “Let’s not forget Josh Inglis, who I think is a strong candidate for the opening batting spot.” Shipperd compared Inglis to David Warner, who is currently being replaced.
After returning from Australia’s white-ball tour in the UK, Inglis scored a century against Queensland in his first red-ball innings this season, and then another century less than two weeks later against Tasmania. He said, “It’s been a really nice start to the summer. I was glad to spend time with family and play well. I hope it continues.”
Inglis has three centuries in his last six Shield matches, averaging over 60. Although Alex Carey will remain the Test keeper for now, many believe Inglis could also play as a batter, especially if someone from the middle order moves up to open.
In the ODI match against Pakistan, Inglis is set to bat at number four, but he will have to wait for his turn since captain Pat Cummins chose to bowl first after winning the toss.
