England's Joe Root had an outstanding performance in the first Test against Pakistan in Multan, scoring the sixth double century of his career. After ending Day 3 at 176 not out, he reached his double hundred in the first session of Day 4. With this achievement, Root surpassed former England player Alastair Cook, who had five double centuries. Now, Root is just one behind Wally Hammond, who holds the record for the most double centuries by an English player with seven.
Root's six double centuries put him on par with cricket legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Virender Sehwag, Kane Williamson, Younis Khan, Javed Miandad, and Marvan Atapattu.
In addition to Root, his batting partner Harry Brook also scored a remarkable double century, maintaining a strike rate of over 80. Together, their partnership reached over 409 runs by Lunch on Day 4, just two runs short of the highest-ever Test partnership for any English pair. They also became the third English duo to achieve multiple partnerships of over 300 runs in Test cricket.
Their partnership is now the highest ever in a Test match played in Multan, breaking the previous record of 336 runs set by Sehwag and Tendulkar in 2004, when Sehwag scored his first triple century.
If either Root or Brook reaches 300 runs, they would be the first English players since Graham Gooch in 1990 to score a triple hundred in Tests. Additionally, Root made history by becoming the first visiting player to score a double century in India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan.
