Gary Kirsten’s role as head coach of Pakistan’s men’s white-ball cricket teams has come to an end just six months after he took charge. Kirsten submitted his resignation, which was accepted by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Jason Gillespie, the head coach of Pakistan's Test team, will temporarily fill the role for the upcoming white-ball tour of Australia.

Sources indicate that serious disagreements had developed between Kirsten and some players, which may have contributed to his decision. Although the PCB did not directly influence his resignation, there was tension surrounding Kirsten’s request to appoint David Reid as a High Performance coach, a move that the PCB didn’t approve. Instead, the board suggested alternative candidates, but Kirsten found these choices unsatisfactory.

On Sunday, the PCB announced the squads for the Australia and Zimbabwe tours and officially named Mohammad Rizwan as the new full-time white-ball captain. However, with the Champions Trophy approaching in less than four months, the PCB now faces the challenge of finding a new white-ball coach. The timing is particularly critical, as Pakistan is set to host an ICC tournament on home soil for the first time in over two decades.

Kirsten took over the white-ball coaching position in mid-May, right after completing his duties with the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He joined the Pakistan squad in England, where they suffered a disappointing series loss to Jos Buttler’s team. The team’s difficulties continued into the T20 World Cup, with an unexpected defeat to the United States and a close loss to India, which ultimately dashed their hopes of advancing to the knockout stage.

With Kirsten's departure, Pakistan will need a strong replacement to help stabilize the team’s performance ahead of major international tournaments.
