Former Pakistan captain Babar Azam acted as a physio for Shaheen Shah Afridi on Sunday after the fast bowler nearly dislocated his thumb during the 3rd ODI against Australia in Perth. Babar's quick response amazed Pakistan legend Wasim Akram, as Shaheen quickly recovered and went on to take two more wickets.
The incident occurred in the 26th over when Sean Abbott hit a shorter delivery from Shaheen toward deep mid-wicket for a single. Babar, who was near the boundary, ran in, collected the ball, and threw it towards the non-striker's end. Although Babar missed the target, the throw hit Shaheen's left thumb as he tried to collect the ball, causing him to grimace in pain and sit on the ground holding his hand.
Babar quickly ran over and pulled Shaheen's thumb, with former Australian cricketer Brendon Julian commenting, “I reckon that’s Babar trying to put the dislocated thumb back.” Wasim Akram, surprised by Babar’s quick action, asked, “How does Babar know how to do that?”
Soon, the team physio arrived and applied a pain-relief spray. After a brief delay, Shaheen returned to bowl, though he seemed cautious during the remaining deliveries of the over. He went on to take two more wickets, including the key dismissal of Aaron Hardie, helping Pakistan bowl Australia out for just 140 runs.
