In a significant setback for the BJP just two days before the Haryana elections, senior leader Ashok Tanwar rejoined Congress during a rally led by Rahul Gandhi in Mahendragarh district on Thursday.

As Rahul Gandhi was finishing his speech, the crowd was asked to wait for an important announcement. Suddenly, Tanwar, who had joined the BJP earlier this year, surprised everyone by coming on stage.

Ashok Tanwar is a well-known Dalit leader and a former president of the Haryana Congress. He left Congress in 2019 after a disagreement with senior Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda. His return just before the campaigning deadline for the October 5 Assembly elections is expected to give Congress a vital boost in its efforts to challenge the BJP in the state.

On stage, Tanwar received a warm welcome from Rahul Gandhi and Hooda, who embraced him and welcomed him back into the party. Senior Congress leader KC Venugopal was also there for the announcement.

Tanwar's political journey has been quite eventful. After leaving Congress in 2019, he briefly joined the Trinamool Congress, then switched to the Aam Aadmi Party in 2022, and finally joined the BJP earlier this year.

His return to Congress comes at a crucial time and is likely to energize the party as they prepare for the upcoming elections.

The Assembly election in Haryana will take place on October 5, and the vote counting will happen on October 8.
