Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde resigned as Maharashtra Chief Minister on Tuesday, adding to the uncertainty about who will take over the role. He submitted his resignation to Governor CP Radhakrishnan at the Raj Bhavan in Mumbai, with his deputies, Ajit Pawar and Devendra Fadnavis, present. Shinde will continue as caretaker Chief Minister until a new government is formed.
The BJP-led Mahayuti coalition won a massive victory in the state elections, securing 235 seats in the 288-member Assembly. However, they have yet to decide on the next chief minister. While the Shiv Sena wants Shinde to continue, highlighting his key role in the successful Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, the BJP is pushing for Devendra Fadnavis to take on the role for a third term, with support from NCP leader Ajit Pawar.
The BJP achieved its best-ever performance in Maharashtra, winning 132 seats, while Shiv Sena secured 57 seats and NCP 41 seats. Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske has urged the BJP to follow Bihar's example, where Nitish Kumar became Chief Minister despite not having the majority, and appoint Shinde as Maharashtra's leader.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Shinde asked his supporters not to gather at his residence to show their support. "I am grateful for your love, but I request everyone not to gather in my support like this," he said
