Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Russia from October 22-23 to attend the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, following an invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The summit, titled "Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security," will give leaders the chance to discuss important global issues, according to the Ministry of External Affairs. The summit will also be an opportunity to review the progress of BRICS initiatives and explore new areas for cooperation.
During the visit, PM Modi is expected to meet with leaders from BRICS countries and other invited nations. President Putin had invited PM Modi for a bilateral meeting on October 22, calling him a "good friend."
This will be PM Modi's second trip to Russia this year. He visited Moscow earlier for an informal meeting with President Putin, which was his first visit since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In August, PM Modi spoke with President Putin, urging a quick resolution to the Ukraine conflict after his visit to Kyiv, where he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
PM Modi has visited Russia six times since becoming Prime Minister, including twice in 2015 for the 7th BRICS Summit. Earlier this year, he was awarded Russia’s highest civilian honor, the Order of Saint Andrew the Apostle.
