Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav called on Janata Dal (United) leader and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to withdraw his party’s support from the Narendra Modi-led government. This came after Yadav, a socialist, was stopped from garlanding the statue of Jai Prakash Narayan. On Thursday, authorities in Lucknow blocked Yadav from reaching the statue, leading to protests by Samajwadi Party workers, which continued on Friday when Yadav returned to the site.
Currently, Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) is part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Yadav noted that many socialist leaders, including Kumar, are supporting the government. He urged Kumar, who rose from the Jai Prakash Narayan-led movement, to take this chance to withdraw support from a government that is stopping socialists from paying tribute to their hero.
Jai Prakash Narayan, or JP, was a Gandhian leader and freedom fighter known for opposing Indira Gandhi during the Emergency. On JP’s birth anniversary, Akhilesh Yadav accused the Modi government of disrespecting his legacy. He also claimed that the government is trying to sell off the museum dedicated to JP, showing their disregard for his contributions and the Constitution. After being denied access to the statue, Yadav said, "We had to pay our respects on the road."
In response, BJP leader Shazia Ilmi criticized Yadav, calling it a political stunt. She said Yadav should stop alliances with parties that JP opposed during the Emergency if he really wants to honor his legacy. She added that Yadav knew about the construction at the site and could have paid tribute in other ways.
The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) explained that the Jai Prakash Narayan Convention Centre is under construction, with materials scattered and potential dangers due to the rainy season. Because of this, they deemed the site unsafe for Yadav, who has Z-Plus security, to visit.
This incident has heightened political tensions, with Yadav’s protests bringing attention to the respect for socialist leaders and the political alliances around the Modi government.
