Ratan Tata: Birth, Age, Family, and Education
Ratan Tata is the son of Naval Tata and Sooni Commissariat. Born on December 28, 1937, in Bombay, his parents separated when he was just 10 years old. Following their separation, he was formally adopted by his grandmother, Navajbai Tata, through the J. N. Petit Parsi Orphanage. Ratan Tata grew up alongside his half-brother, Noel Tata, who is the son of Naval Tata and Simone Tata.
Ratan Tata completed his schooling in Mumbai and later moved to the U.S. for higher education. He attended the prestigious Cornell University, where he earned a degree in architecture and structural engineering in 1962. Following that, he completed an advanced management program at Harvard Business School in 1975.
Ratan Tata's Leadership at Tata Sons
Ratan Tata began his career in a challenging environment. When J.R.D. Tata stepped down as Chairman of Tata Sons in 1991, he chose Ratan Tata as his successor. Ratan faced strong resistance from many company leaders who had spent years in their positions. To bring about change, he set a retirement age for executives and required each company to report to the group office. This helped organize the overlapping companies under Tata Sons into a more efficient structure.
During his 21 years as leader, Ratan Tata saw the company grow dramatically. Revenues increased more than 40 times, and profits rose over 50 times. He led major acquisitions, including Tata Tea's purchase of Tetley, Tata Motors' acquisition of Jaguar Land Rover, and Tata Steel's buyout of Corus. To find his permanent successor, a selection committee was formed, including Ratan Tata, TVS Group head Venu Srinivasan, Amit Chandra of Bain Capital, former diplomat Ronen Sen, and Lord Kumar Bhattacharya. They named Natarajan Chandrasekaran as the Chairman of Tata Sons on January 12, 2017.
