A video has emerged on social media showing Zakir Naik, a fugitive Islamic preacher, in a heated argument with a girl who questioned him about issues like pedophilia in Islamic societies.
The exchange took place at a public event in Karachi, Pakistan. The girl, who said she was Pashtun, asked Naik, "Why are there so many problems like pedophilia, adultery, and drug addiction where I live, even though people are very religious? Why don’t the religious scholars speak out about them?"
Naik responded lightly at first, joking that men should learn from women and not go out without a good reason. When the girl tried to explain that pedophilia was becoming more accepted in her area, he interrupted her, insisting she be quiet so he could answer. He stated, "There’s no mention of pedophilia in the Quran or any Islamic texts."
Naik, known for his strong defense of Islamic beliefs, accused the girl of defaming Islam. He claimed, "A Muslim can never commit sexual abuse against children. You should think carefully before making such accusations."
When the girl tried to stand her ground, he insisted she was wrong and demanded she apologize. Many people criticized Naik on social media for being dismissive of her serious concerns and for gaslighting her.
Zakir Naik, who was born in Mumbai, is wanted in India on charges of terror funding, money laundering, and hate speech. His organization, the Islamic Research Foundation, has been banned by the Indian government, and his passport has been revoked. He has been living in Malaysia since 2017, where he continues to give lectures. Critics say his teachings often misinterpret Islamic texts and promote a narrow view of Islam, contributing to the radicalization of young Muslims.
