A 55-year-old doctor, Dr. Javed Akhtar, was shot and killed by two teenagers inside Nima Hospital in Delhi’s Jaitpur area in the early hours of Thursday, October 3. According to police reports, the suspects, aged between 16 and 17, entered the hospital around 1:30 am, pretending to need treatment for an injured toe. After the hospital staff changed the dressing on one of the teenager’s toes, the two went into Dr. Akhtar’s cabin and shot him in the head, killing him instantly.

Police stated that the teenagers had visited the hospital two days earlier, on October 1, under the pretense of seeking treatment. This initial visit is believed to have been a recce (reconnaissance) to plan the attack. Speaking about the incident, a hospital staff member recalled, "Around 1 am, two teenage boys came for treatment. After the dressing, they entered the doctor’s cabin and shot him in the head. Dr. Javed was on night duty since 8 pm and had been working at the hospital for the last two years."

After receiving a call about the incident, Delhi Police arrived at the scene and started reviewing CCTV footage from the hospital and surrounding areas to identify and track down the accused. The Forensics Unit also arrived at the hospital to collect technical evidence from the crime scene. According to a police official, the attack appears to have been a targeted killing, but the exact motive is still under investigation.

This is not the first instance of violence against medical professionals in Delhi. In August, a female resident doctor and a medical dresser were attacked by a patient’s relative at Doctor Hedgewar Hospital. The patient, who was under the influence of alcohol, and his son assaulted the doctor and threatened her during treatment.
