The Congress government in Telangana has decided to reject a Rs 100 crore donation from the Adani Group for a skills university. The donation was intended for the Young India Skill University, which aims to develop industry-specific skills among youth. However, this decision comes amid a controversy involving Gautam Adani, the Adani Group's chairman, who has been accused by US prosecutors of paying bribes to Indian government officials to secure solar power contracts.
Telangana's Chief Minister, Revanth Reddy, clarified that the state government had not accepted any funds or donations from the Adani Group for the university. He stated that the government had informed the Adani Group that it would not accept the promised Rs 100 crore donation. Reddy emphasized that any donations would be accepted only through a transparent, democratic process that involves calling for tenders.
The rejection of the donation has sparked political reactions. Opposition parties, including the BJP and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), have criticized the Congress for what they see as inconsistent behavior. BJP's Amit Malviya pointed out the contradiction, accusing Congress of accepting a donation from Adani despite criticizing him in public. BRS leader KT Rama Rao also mocked Congress, highlighting the apparent contradiction in their stance on Adani.
Despite the controversy, many other companies have donated to the university, which continues its work without the Adani donation. The Telangana government’s decision to reject the funds reflects its careful handling of the sensitive issue amid ongoing political debate.
