The Supreme Court has criticized the Delhi government for the increase in pollution after Diwali, stating that the ban on firecrackers was barely enforced in the capital.
The court has ordered the AAP government and Delhi Police Commissioner to submit affidavits detailing the steps taken to enforce the ban this year, as well as plans to improve enforcement next year.
According to Reuters, Delhi was named the world’s most polluted city the morning after Diwali (November 1). Air quality in many parts of the city reached dangerous levels, with PM2.5 concentrations creating serious health risks for breathing.
The Supreme Court pointed out that pollution in Delhi this year was the worst in recent years. The court also instructed the Delhi Police Commissioner to provide an affidavit explaining what actions were taken to enforce the firecracker ban.
The court also noted an increase in stubble burning around Diwali, which worsened air quality. It directed the Punjab and Haryana governments to submit affidavits detailing the number of stubble burning incidents in the last ten days of October.
