The Supreme Court has temporarily paused a Madras High Court order that permitted police action against Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev's Isha Foundation in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, and has taken over the case.

This decision came after the Isha Foundation challenged the High Court's order, which had directed the Tamil Nadu government to provide details of all criminal cases filed against it. The Supreme Court ordered that no further police action should be taken based on the High Court’s directions and asked Coimbatore Rural Police to investigate the allegations and submit a status report by October 18.

The case began after S. Kamaraj, a retired professor, accused the foundation of brainwashing and holding his two daughters, aged 42 and 39, at the ashram against their will. However, during the hearing, CJI DY Chandrachud spoke to the daughters, who appeared virtually, and they confirmed they were staying at the ashram by choice.

The Madras High Court had earlier questioned the foundation's practices, such as promoting monkhood, and asked why Sadhguru’s own daughter is married and settled while encouraging others to become monks. The High Court’s order also referred to several pending criminal cases against the foundation, including a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

In response, Isha Foundation dismissed the claims as baseless, stating that it promotes yoga and spirituality and respects individuals' freedom to choose their paths. The foundation denied forcing people into marriage or monkhood and warned of legal action against those spreading false information.
