Justice Sanjiv Khanna was sworn in as the 51st Chief Justice of India today, taking over from Justice DY Chandrachud, who retired yesterday. The oath was administered by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Justice Khanna, 64, will serve as Chief Justice for six months, retiring on May 13 next year.
The ceremony was attended by Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and other dignitaries. Former Chief Justice DY Chandrachud was also present.
Justice Khanna was born in Delhi and studied at Modern School Barakhamba Road, St. Stephen's College, and Delhi University's Campus Law Centre. His father, Justice Dev Raj Khanna, was a Delhi High Court judge, and his mother, Saroj Khanna, was a lecturer at Lady Shri Ram College. His uncle, Justice Hans Raj Khanna, was a Supreme Court judge known for his historic dissent during the Emergency.
Justice Khanna started his career as a lawyer and became a Delhi High Court judge in 2005. He was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019. He has been part of important rulings, including validating the use of Electronic Voting Machines, upholding the revocation of Article 370, and striking down the electoral bonds scheme as unconstitutional.
