The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a red alert for nine districts in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, for Wednesday. They expect heavy to very heavy rain in areas like Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, and parts of Puducherry and Karaikal.
An extremely heavy rainfall alert is given when some places might receive more than 20.4 cm of rain.
Additionally, an orange alert has been issued for Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Perambalur, Ariyalur, and Thanjavur, indicating heavy to very heavy rains (between 11.5 cm and 20.5 cm) for the same day.
The RMC also mentioned that heavy rain is likely in Ranipet, Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Thanjavur, and Puducherry on Tuesday.
They confirmed a low-pressure area has formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal, which is expected to strengthen and move towards northern Tamil Nadu in the next two days.
Due to the heavy rain warning for Chennai and nearby areas, the state government has announced a holiday for schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts on Tuesday. This decision was made during a review meeting led by Chief Minister MK Stalin on Monday.
Additionally, the government has advised private IT companies to allow their employees to work from home from Tuesday until Saturday.
The School Education Department has sent out a circular to all schools in the state, asking them to take safety precautions during the rainy season. These precautions include checking electricity cables, clearing drains, trimming trees, and ensuring that water does not collect on school rooftops. Schools are also advised not to use any old or unsafe buildings.
Schools can hire workers under the MGNREGA program and get help from School Management Committee members to clean their premises and rooftops during the holiday. They must also inspect their buildings for safety and do any needed repairs.
Headmasters and teachers have been told to inform parents not to let their children go near water bodies. Students are encouraged to use raincoats and umbrellas, as stated in the circular.
Furthermore, schools must provide information about staff members responsible for the premises to the revenue department in case the school buildings are needed to shelter people affected by the rain.
