Ratan Naval Tata, a legendary figure in Indian business and former chairman of the Tata Group, passed away late Wednesday night at the age of 86. He had been receiving treatment for a long illness at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai for the past few days.
“It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Mr. Ratan Naval Tata, an extraordinary leader whose huge contributions have shaped both the Tata Group and our nation,” said N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, in a statement. He described Ratan Tata as "a mentor, guide, and friend," adding that Tata was "more than just the chairperson of the Tata Group."
Chandrasekaran noted that Ratan Tata inspired others with his commitment to excellence, integrity, and innovation. Under his leadership, the Tata Group grew globally while staying true to its values. He also highlighted Tata's dedication to philanthropy, which has positively impacted millions in areas like education and healthcare.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Ratan Tata, calling him “a visionary business leader, a compassionate person, and an extraordinary human being.” Modi praised Tata for providing stable leadership to one of India’s oldest and most respected companies, as well as his kindness and commitment to improving society.
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi also expressed his condolences, stating, "Ratan Tata was a man with a vision. He has made a lasting impact on both business and philanthropy," in a tweet.
