Actor and politician Mithun Chakraborty has been chosen to receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest government honor for contributions to cinema. He is a three-time National Award winner and has appeared in over 350 films in Hindi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Odia, Telugu, and Tamil. Mithun is one of the few actors to win Best Actor on his first attempt.

Mithun's son, Namashi Chakraborty, shared his pride about his father's achievement, saying, “I feel extremely proud and honored. My father is a self-made superstar and a great citizen. His life journey inspires millions, and we are all very happy for this wonderful honor.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Mithun, saying, “I am delighted that Shri Mithun Chakraborty has received the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his outstanding contributions to Indian cinema. He is a cultural icon, admired by many for his versatile performances. Congratulations and best wishes to him.”

Mithun’s filmography

Mithun Chakraborty is known for his acting and dance skills. He was a superstar in the 80s and 90s and has smoothly transitioned into supporting roles in recent years. Some of his famous films include Disco Dancer, Mrigayaa, Gudia, Guru, and Oh My God.

He first captured the nation’s attention as a dancing superstar in *Disco Dancer* (1982) but established his acting talent with earlier films like Mrinal Sen’s Mrigayaa (1976), Surakshaa (1979), Bimal Dutt’s Kasturi (1980), and Khwaja Ahmad Abbas’ The Naxalites, which was shown at the Cannes Film Festival. 

Mithun also won two National Awards for Tahader Katha (1992) and Swami Vivekananda (1996), even when he starred in films focused more on commercial success. He was known not only for his dancing but also for his action roles, making him an important figure in Hindi cinema. He tried various genres, including comedy, and gained international fame from Disco Dancer in countries like Russia and Kazakhstan. He also hosted popular TV shows like Grandmaster, Bigg Boss Bangla, Dadagiri, and Dance Indian Dance.

In addition to his work in films and television, Mithun is involved in politics. He was previously with the Trinamool Congress and served in the Rajya Sabha from 2014 to 2016. Currently, he is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Mithun’s films have connected with the masses, earning him the title of the "common man’s hero." Born as Gouranga Chakraborty in Calcutta in 1950, his rise to fame has inspired many.
