Over 45 senior doctors and faculty members of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital resigned on Tuesday to show solidarity with the junior doctors protesting the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor on the hospital premises in August. The senior doctors claimed that no progress has been made in the investigation and that the demands of their junior colleagues have not been met.
In their resignation letter, the senior doctors expressed concern over the deteriorating health of the junior doctors, who have been on a hunger strike for four consecutive days amid the Durga Puja festivities. They urged the hospital administration to reconcile with the protesting doctors and resolve the issue urgently.
"We are submitting mass resignations as the government seems unaware of the worsening condition of doctors on hunger strike. If the situation continues, we will also submit individual resignations," they said.
The Joint Platform of Doctors (JPD), another medical group, also extended support to the junior doctors, stating that many faculty members and senior doctors have expressed their willingness to resign in protest against the lack of action.
"Junior doctors are on hunger strike and have been demonstrating for the last five days, yet there is no response from the authorities. The JPD, West Bengal, will stand in solidarity with medical teachers and government doctors if they decide to resign en masse," the organization said.
Despite the ongoing protests and symbolic hunger strikes by senior doctors, no resolution has been reached, and the junior doctors continue their hunger strike, demanding justice for the trainee doctor.
