On Friday, Google honored the famous Indian playback singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, known as KK, with a special animated doodle. This tribute marks the anniversary of his debut in Bollywood, celebrating his influence on Indian music.
KK's first Bollywood song, "Chhod Aaye Hum" from the movie Maachis, was released on this day in 1996. This song marked the start of his successful music career.
Born on August 23, 1968, in Delhi, KK studied at Kirori Mal College, Delhi University. Before moving into music, he worked in marketing. In 1994, he sent a demo tape to different artists, leading him to start singing jingles for commercials, which showcased his talent.
His Bollywood breakthrough came in 1999 with the song "Tadap Tadap" from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. This emotional song connected deeply with listeners and established KK as a top playback singer. That same year, he also released his first album, Pal, which included many popular songs.
KK's career was known for its variety. He sang in many languages, including Hindi, Telugu, Bengali, Kannada, and Malayalam. Over his lifetime, he recorded around 3,500 jingles and more than 700 songs for movies, becoming one of the most loved singers in India. He earned six Filmfare Award nominations and two Star Screen Awards for his music.
KK passed away in May 2022 at age 53 after a heart attack during a concert in Kolkata. His death shocked fans and colleagues, who mourned his loss deeply. In Kolkata, a statue was put up in his memory near the venue where he gave his last concert.
KK’s soulful voice and impact on Indian playback singing are treasured in Indian culture. Google’s Doodle on Friday celebrates his legacy, honoring the joy he brought to audiences through his music.
