Heavy rain hit parts of Odisha and West Bengal on Thursday as authorities worked quickly to evacuate thousands of people from coastal areas before the expected landfall of cyclone Dana tonight.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that cyclone Dana has strengthened into a severe storm with wind speeds reaching up to 120 km/h. This storm could affect nearly half of Odisha's population, while West Bengal is expected to experience very heavy rain today and tomorrow.

As of 8:30 AM today, the cyclone was located 210 km southeast of Paradip, 240 km south-southeast of Dhamara (both in Odisha), and 310 km south of Sagar Island (West Bengal). The landfall is expected to occur between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra port in Odisha.

On Thursday and Friday, districts in West Bengal, including North and South 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Kolkata, Howrah, and Hooghly, are predicted to receive very heavy rain.

Kolkata airport will suspend flights from 6 PM Thursday to 9 AM Friday, while Bhubaneswar airport will halt operations from 5 PM today to 9 AM Friday. Nearly 200 trains have also been canceled in the two states due to the cyclone.

As of Wednesday evening, about 300,000 people had been evacuated from Odisha, and over 114,000 people in West Bengal have been moved to shelters.
