Six districts in Bengal, including North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, East Medinipur, and West Medinipur, have been put on high alert for Cyclone Dana, which is expected to hit between Puri and Ganga Sagar on October 24.
Heavy rainfall is predicted in these areas. The Cabinet Secretary has met with the Chief Secretaries of Bengal and Odisha since both states will be most affected. The Bengal and Odisha governments have held multiple meetings to prepare for the cyclone.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed nine teams: three in East Medinipur, one in West Medinipur, three in South 24 Parganas, and two in North 24 Parganas. Fishermen have been warned to stay off the sea. Monitoring is ongoing, and people are being moved to relief camps before the cyclone hits. The Kolkata Police also reviewed emergency arrangements.
Home Minister Amit Shah was scheduled to visit Hooghly Arambagh, but his visit was postponed due to the cyclone. Other planned programs in Bengal are expected to continue.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is likely to strengthen into a cyclonic storm in the next two days, bringing heavy rain as it makes landfall on October 24. Winds along the Odisha-West Bengal coast are expected to reach 60 km/h on October 23, rising to 120 km/h by the night of October 24 into October 25. Fishermen in West Bengal and Odisha have been advised to stay off the sea on October 23.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi spoke with Union Home Minister Amit Shah about Cyclone Dana and the state’s preparations. The central government has promised support, including additional NDRF teams and a helicopter stationed at Bhubaneswar airport for emergency response.
