Canada has made new accusations against the Indian government, claiming that New Delhi is directly involved in serious criminal activities on Canadian soil. While Canada did not provide evidence for these claims, it alleged that Indian agents in Canada are collaborating with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang to target pro-Khalistan individuals.
These allegations come at a time when Lawrence Bishnoi is in the news in India for his suspected role in the murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique in Mumbai.
During a press conference on Monday night, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said their investigation into the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Khalistani terrorist who was shot in Canada last year, revealed links between Indian government agents and violent acts in Canada. This press conference followed Canada’s claims that Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Verma and other diplomats are 'persons of interest' in the Nijjar murder investigation.
The RCMP stated that various individuals and businesses in Canada and abroad have been used by Indian agents to gather information, with some being coerced into helping the Indian government. This information is reportedly used to target members of the South Asian community.
When asked if the Sikh community is being targeted, RCMP Assistant Commissioner Brigitte Gauvin said that while the South Asian community is being targeted, Indian agents are specifically focusing on pro-Khalistani elements in Canada. She mentioned that organized crime groups, particularly the Bishnoi gang, are involved and connected to Indian government agents.
For a long time, India has accused Canada of sheltering Khalistani terrorists, who were linked to the Air India Flight 182 bombing that killed 329 people. These new allegations come amid efforts by Khalistani supporters to blame India for the bombing and improve their image in Canada.
India has also expressed concerns about Canada being a safe haven for organized crime. In May, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar criticized Canada’s immigration policy after three Indian nationals linked to Nijjar's murder were arrested. He pointed out that many criminals from Punjab have been welcomed into Canada, despite being wanted in India.
In June 2022, the Indian High Commission in Ottawa raised concerns about gangsters in Canada being involved in violent crimes in Punjab, following the killing of singer Sidhu Moose Wala, for which the Bishnoi gang claimed responsibility.
The Bishnoi gang, which operates in northern India, has connections in Canada. Lawrence Bishnoi is currently in a jail in Gujarat, India. Canada’s decision to link Indian agents with the Bishnoi gang comes just two days after Baba Siddique's murder, which the gang has claimed responsibility for, although the police are still investigating that claim. This move by Canada could be seen as an effort to support its accusations, even though no evidence has been provided.
