A clash occurred between MPs from the ruling BJP and the Opposition during a meeting of the parliamentary committee discussing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill on Tuesday. The Opposition accused the BJP MPs of using offensive language, leading them to walk out of the meeting for the second day in a row.
The fight started after a heated exchange between BJP MPs Nishikant Dubey, Dilip Saikia, Abhijit Ganguly, Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee, and Congress's Gaurav Gogoi over a proposal to include women in Waqf boards. The Opposition claimed that the committee chairperson, Jagdambika Pal, was not following the rules and did not take action against the BJP MPs. In response, the BJP MPs said that the Opposition members were being disrespectful to the chairperson.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill was presented by the government on July 28, but after strong objections from the Opposition, it was sent to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on August 8.
On Monday, the Opposition walked out after Anwar Manippady, the former chairperson of the Karnataka State Minorities Commission, accused Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge of being involved in Waqf land scams. The Opposition argued that unproven allegations against high-ranking officials should not be made during committee meetings. They claimed the chairperson ignored their objections and allowed the testimony to continue.
Last month, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey wrote to Pal, expressing concerns about the large number of 1.25 crore submissions received on the Waqf bill and requested an investigation by the Union Home Ministry. Dubey alleged that fundamentalist groups or foreign powers might be involved.
