Mumbai police have arrested a 17-year-old boy for posting bomb threats on the social media platform X. His threats caused Air India and IndiGo Airlines to delay and divert several international flights.

Indian Teen Behind Bomb Threats

Police found the teenager from Chhattisgarh, central India, who made the bomb threats on social media. He has been brought to Mumbai and will stay in custody until October 24.

Deputy Commissioner Maneesh Kalwaniya said the threats were made because of a money dispute. The boy targeted a business associate, Fazluddin Nirban, by creating fake accounts with Nirban’s name to send the threats.

The teenager claimed that three international flights had 6kg of explosives (RDX) and six terrorists on board. The flights mentioned were Air India AI119 from Mumbai to New York, IndiGo 6E1275 from Mumbai to Muscat, and IndiGo 6E57 from Mumbai to Jeddah.

These threats led to quick security actions. IndiGo delayed its flights, and Air India diverted its plane heading to New York. Police have also detained Nirban for questioning as part of the investigation.

20 Security Threats in a Week

A wave of bomb threats has caused major disruptions in Indian aviation, affecting about 20 flights this week.

On Monday, three international flights from Mumbai were involved in a security scare. Air India had to divert its flight to New York to New Delhi, and IndiGo moved two planes to isolated areas for security checks, delaying flights to Muscat and Jeddah.

The situation got worse on Tuesday when seven more flights, including one heading to the U.S., received threats through social media. Security agencies activated counter-terrorism protocols at several airports in response.

The disruptions continued on Wednesday, with around eight flights receiving threats. An Akasa Air flight had to return to Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport because of a bomb threat, and IndiGo diverted its Mumbai-Delhi flight to Ahmedabad for safety reasons. A Vistara Airlines flight from Frankfurt to Mumbai also reported a bomb threat.

Cyber cells from Raipur and Rajnandgaon collected electronic evidence connecting the threats to Rajnandgaon. Mumbai Police worked with local authorities to question suspects, focusing on a 17-year-old from the area and his associates.
