The BJP is promoting the slogan "Ek hain toh safe hain" (Together, we are safe) as part of its Assembly election campaign in Maharashtra. The slogan, introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, criticizes Congress for allegedly dividing communities and hindering the progress of backward classes. It appeared prominently in newspapers across Maharashtra on Monday, along with the logos of the BJP's alliance partners, Shiv Sena and the NCP.
At a recent rally in Dhule, PM Modi attacked Congress, claiming the party aims to create divisions among castes and prevent the progress of SCs, STs, and OBCs. He urged people to stay united, stating, “We are safe if we are united."
The slogan has been criticized by Congress and other opposition parties. They accused the BJP of deepening societal divisions and promoting an "us vs them" mentality, playing on people's fears and insecurities.
Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge questioned the need for the slogan, asking who feels threatened. He argued that the real threat comes from the BJP and the RSS.
The slogan also faced resistance from BJP ally Ajit Pawar of the NCP. Pawar disagreed with PM Modi's message and the original version of the slogan, "Batenge, toh katenge" (Divided, we fall), introduced by UP CM Yogi Adityanath. He said that such a message wouldn't resonate in Maharashtra and that the focus should be on development.
