The Bahraich district administration has suspended two police officers and detained over 25 people after violence broke out during an idol immersion procession on Sunday evening, resulting in the death of a 22-year-old man.
Officials ordered schools to stay closed on Monday as a precaution and sent extra police to the area to maintain peace. District Magistrate Monika Rani said that the authorities had facilitated the immersion of the idols, which continued until 5 a.m. on Sunday after the violence occurred in the Maharajganj area.
The victim, Ram Gopal Mishra, who lived in Rehuwa Mansoor village, died from a gunshot wound. His body has been handed over to his family after the post-mortem.
The violence started in the Mahsi Maharajganj market area when a dispute arose over loud music during the procession passing through a minority-dominated area. According to the police, stones were thrown at the procession, and someone fired a gun, hitting Mishra.
After Mishra's death, locals became angry, vandalizing vehicles and setting four houses on fire. Superintendent of Police Vrinda Shukla reported that 25-30 people have been detained for their roles in the conflict, and more suspects are being identified using video footage.
A first information report has been filed against a man named Salman, from whose house the gunshots were fired. The officers suspended are Hardi SHO SK Verma and Mahsi Police out-post in-charge Shiv Kumar Saroj. Rani added that an additional district magistrate and a sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) have been sent to the area, along with sufficient police forces.
