Shubham Lonkar, who posted on social media claiming responsibility for the murder on behalf of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, provided weapons to the shooters who killed former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddiqui.
Shubham's brother, Pravin Lonkar, was key in providing money and support to the shooters. The two brothers and several accomplices met multiple times in Pune to plan the murder.
Baba Siddiqui, 66, was shot dead while leaving his office for home in Bandra West on Saturday night. The attackers fired six shots at him, three of which hit him. He was declared dead after being taken to the hospital.
Sources say that Shubham Lonkar met with Shiv, Dharmaraj, and Gurmail Singh in Pune to finalize the details of the murder. Although no specific amount was promised to the shooters at first, they were told they would receive a large reward after the murder. Each shooter received Rs 50,000 upfront to cover their expenses.
The police confirmed that the main target was Baba Siddiqui, not Zeeshan Siddiqui. The shooters were given a photograph of Baba Siddiqui and a flex banner to help identify him. An investigator mentioned, "There was no fixed amount promised, but they were assured a big reward."
The shooters arrived in Mumbai in September, with Dharmaraj and Shiv Kumar arriving first, followed by Gurmail Singh from Haryana. They shot at Baba Siddiqui from six to seven feet away, and Dharmaraj used pepper spray to escape.
After the shooting, Dharmaraj Kashyap sprayed pepper in the air to create a distraction and flee the scene. Despite the chaos, the shooters initially managed to get away.
The police are investigating the social media posts claiming responsibility for the murder and have contacted Facebook and Instagram to verify if the Lawrence Bishnoi gang was involved.
Authorities are still searching for another suspect, Shiv, and the alleged mastermind, Mohammad Zeeshan Akhtar, who are both still at large.
