Over the past 24 hours, 79 flights, mostly international, have faced bomb threats, adding to a total of approximately 169 hoax threats received by various airlines this week. The targeted airlines include IndiGo, Vistara, Akasa, and Air India, with destinations such as Jeddah, Istanbul, and Riyadh being among those affected.
IndiGo was particularly impacted, with several of its flights receiving threats. For instance, IndiGo flight 6E 164 from Mangaluru to Mumbai was evacuated after a bomb threat, with passengers safely disembarked and thorough security checks conducted. Similarly, IndiGo's 6E 75 from Ahmedabad to Jeddah landed safely, and passengers were evacuated as per security protocols. Other IndiGo flights to and from major international destinations, such as Jeddah, Dammam, Riyadh, and Istanbul, were also disrupted, with some flights being diverted to nearby airports.
This surge in hoax threats follows an announcement by Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, who stated that making hoax bomb threat calls will soon be classified as a cognizable offense. The growing number of such threats has caused significant disruptions in airline operations nationwide.
In response, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) held a meeting with airline executives in New Delhi to discuss the situation. Just days earlier, on October 19, over 30 flights received hoax bomb threats, affecting major carriers like IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, and Vistara. The aviation authorities are taking steps to address the issue and ensure passenger safety.
