Over 150 people were injured, with eight in serious condition, after a fireworks accident at a temple festival in Kasaragod, Kerala, early Monday morning, according to the police. The incident happened around 12:30 am during the annual Kaliyattam festival at the Anjootambalam Veerarkavu Temple.
The injured were taken to various hospitals in Kasaragod, Kannur, and Mangaluru for treatment. Police believe the accident started when a nearby fireworks storage area caught fire. After the incident, senior district officials, including the collector and police chief, visited the site.
An investigation is underway to determine what caused the fire, and local communities have gathered to support the injured and their families.
Earlier this week, Kerala Police filed a report about disruptions at the famous Thrissur Pooram festival back in April. The report mentions charges like criminal conspiracy, religious provocation, and incitement to riot, although it doesn’t name anyone specifically.
In a statement, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said there were attempts to disrupt the Thrissur Pooram, known for its elephant and drum parades, but the festival continued without issues. He accused the Sangh Parivar of trying to interfere and called the Congress-led UDF the "B-team of the Sangh Parivar."
