Israel's national security council has urged its citizens to immediately leave certain tourist areas in southern Sri Lanka, such as Arugam Bay and nearby beaches, due to a potential terrorist threat. The warning is based on new information about a possible attack targeting tourist spots.

While not providing details about the threat, the council advised Israelis in other parts of Sri Lanka to stay cautious and avoid large public gatherings.

Israel's security agencies are working closely with Sri Lankan authorities to monitor the situation.

The U.S. embassy in Sri Lanka also issued a security alert, warning of a credible threat targeting tourist locations in Arugam Bay and advising U.S. citizens to avoid the area until further notice.

Police increase security in tourist areas

Police have increased security in the area, and officials are on high alert, as stated by police spokesperson Nihal Thalduwa in a video released in Colombo.

He mentioned, “This area is popular for surfing, which has attracted many Israeli tourists. We are working to ensure their safety.”

Sri Lanka, known for its beautiful beaches, tea gardens, and ancient temples, is seeing a revival in tourism as it recovers from a serious financial crisis. In the first eight months of this year, the island welcomed 1.5 million visitors, including 20,515 from Israel, according to government data.
