South Korea has promised to take action against military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, despite North Korea denying that it sent troops to support Russia in the war against Ukraine.
On Tuesday, South Korean officials stated that the alliance between Russia and North Korea is a global threat. They vowed to work with allies to respond, possibly including sending weapons to Ukraine. This comes after South Korea summoned the Russian ambassador, accusing North Korea of sending 1,500 soldiers to fight alongside Russian forces. North Korea rejected these claims as “groundless rumors,” but South Korea dismissed their denial and pledged to take steps in response.
South Korea’s National Security Council said that North Korea sending troops to Russia’s war in Ukraine is a serious threat to both South Korea and the international community. They announced that they would take action in phases and consider measures such as supplying defensive weapons to Ukraine. So far, South Korea has provided non-lethal aid to Ukraine, like demining equipment, but could now consider sending arms.
North Korea has also denied accusations from the United States and South Korea that it has been supplying weapons to Russia. On Monday, North Korea dismissed claims from South Korea’s spy agency that it had sent special forces to Russia’s Far East for training before being deployed to Ukraine.
North Korea’s representative at the UN rejected the allegations as false and said they were meant to harm North Korea’s image and its friendly relations with Russia. Russia, on the other hand, has not confirmed the deployment of North Korean troops but defended its military ties with North Korea, stating that they don’t threaten South Korea’s security.
North Korea and Russia have had strong relations since North Korea was founded, and the war in Ukraine has brought them even closer.
