North Korea has accused South Korea of sending drones to drop many anti-North leaflets over its capital, Pyongyang. In response, North Korea is preparing to destroy roads that connect it to South Korea, as tensions rise between the two countries.
According to South Korea's military, North Korean soldiers have been seen camouflaging on the roads near the border, likely getting ready to blow them up. This could happen as soon as Monday.
Last week, North Korea's Army said it would completely cut off roads and railways that link to South Korea and strengthen its defenses along the border. They also warned that if South Korean drones fly over Pyongyang again, there could be serious consequences.
A spokesperson for South Korea’s military declined to comment on whether their military or civilians sent the drones. They stated that responding to North Korea's claims might allow the North to use it as an excuse for more aggressive actions.
Since 2022, South Korea has been working to improve its defenses against drones after some North Korean drones entered its airspace. Experts believe that civilians could easily get drones capable of making the trip to Pyongyang with light payloads like leaflets.
The two Koreas are technically still at war since their conflict from 1950 to 1953 ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty. The current situation marks a significant change from a more peaceful period in 2018 when the leaders of both countries promised to end the war and improve relations.
