Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has fired Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, saying he no longer has confidence in how Gallant is handling Israel’s current military situation, according to media reports.
Netanyahu’s office announced that Foreign Minister Israel Katz will now serve as Defense Minister, and Gideon Saar will replace Katz as the new Foreign Minister.
In a statement, Netanyahu said that “trust has eroded” over the past few months, which led to his decision to remove Gallant. He added that Gallant’s actions and statements often went against government and cabinet decisions, and that their disagreements had become public, benefiting Israel’s enemies.
Following the announcement, Gallant posted on X (formerly Twitter) in Hebrew, saying, “The security of the State of Israel was and will always remain the mission of my life.”
Gallant and Netanyahu, both from the right-wing Likud party, had been at odds over Israel’s ongoing conflict in Gaza with Hamas. Gallant had expressed concerns about the war’s direction, while Netanyahu insisted that fighting must continue until Hamas is fully defeated.
Earlier this year, Netanyahu had also dismissed Gallant over disagreements on a proposed judicial overhaul, but later reinstated him after public protests.
