U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Florida Congressman Mike Waltz as his National Security Advisor (NSA), according to sources cited by The Associated Press.

Waltz, who chairs the House Armed Services Committee, has been a strong critic of President Biden, particularly over the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, which left weapons in the hands of the Taliban. A loyal supporter of Trump, Waltz backed efforts to challenge the 2020 election results and has criticized what he calls a “woke” military, arguing it focuses too much on diversity and inclusion programs.

He is also a vocal critic of China, highlighting issues like intellectual property theft, unfair trade practices, and risks to U.S. supply chains. Waltz supports reducing U.S. reliance on Chinese manufacturing and protecting American technology. He even called for a boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, citing China’s treatment of Uighur Muslims and its alleged role in the Covid-19 pandemic.

As NSA, Waltz will face major foreign policy challenges, including the ongoing war in Ukraine, tensions in the Middle East, and concerns about the growing alliance between Russia and North Korea. His appointment comes as Capitol Hill monitors Trump’s selection of House members, since it could lead to new elections to fill any resulting vacancies.
