During his first visit to India, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu assured that his country's "Maldives First" policy will not harm its long-standing relationship with India, especially regarding security. In an interview with the *Times of India*, Muizzu said, "We are confident that our engagements with other nations will not undermine India’s security interests."
Despite being seen as pro-China, Muizzu emphasized that the Maldives values its relationship with India, describing it as a "valued partner and friend." He confirmed that the Maldives will work with India to ensure regional stability and security, even though India is concerned about the Maldives' growing ties with China in areas like defense and trade.
When asked about his decision to remove Indian troops from the Maldives, Muizzu stated that it reflected the wishes of most Maldivians. He explained, "What I did is what the people of Maldives asked from me. Our review of past agreements aims to ensure they align with our national interests."
Muizzu expressed confidence that the relationship between the Maldives and India will continue to strengthen. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also noted that his visit would boost the longstanding partnership between the two nations.
This visit is crucial for Muizzu, especially as he seeks financial support from India to address the Maldives' economic crisis and significant debt. During his time in India, he plans to discuss various issues with Prime Minister Modi, hoping to reset the diplomatic ties between the countries.
