Swedish prosecutors confirmed on Tuesday they are investigating a rape case after media reports linked French footballer Kylian Mbappe to the incident. However, they did not name the suspect. Swedish newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen had earlier reported that a rape investigation was launched following Mbappe's two-day visit to Stockholm.
The Swedish Prosecution Authority issued a statement confirming that a criminal report had been filed, but they did not provide details about the suspect. The alleged incident is said to have occurred at a hotel on October 10, with no further information released at the time.
Both Swedish papers identified Mbappe as the suspect, citing anonymous sources. Expressen reported that Mbappe is "reasonably suspected" of rape, a lower level of suspicion in Sweden's legal system. Aftonbladet added that the complaint was filed after the alleged victim sought medical attention.
According to the reports, Mbappe had been in Stockholm for leisure, dining at a restaurant and visiting a nightclub with a group before leaving the city on October 13. The complaint was reportedly filed on Saturday.
Mbappe, who was not selected for France's latest round of Nations League matches, strongly denied the allegations. On Monday, he posted on social media, calling the reports "fake news" and suggesting that the timing was suspicious, as it coincided with his scheduled hearing over a wage dispute with Paris Saint-Germain, where he claims he is owed €55 million.
The investigation is ongoing, and no further details have been released.
