United Nations leader António Guterres warned that Lebanon is in a dangerous situation and urged both Israel and Hezbollah to stop the violence. He noted that Lebanon is going through its worst period of conflict in a generation.
To help prevent a wider war, the US and ten of its allies are calling for a 21-day ceasefire along the Israel-Lebanon border.
Here are the key points:
- Possible Ground Attack: Israel is planning a ground attack in Lebanon to target Hezbollah's infrastructure, according to the Israeli military.
- Hezbollah Responds: Hezbollah fired a missile near Tel Aviv, marking the first time they've attacked that close to the city. They said they aimed at Israel’s intelligence headquarters.
- Casualties: Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon resulted in 81 deaths and over 400 injuries recently.
- Displacement: More than 90,000 people have been displaced in Lebanon due to the conflict. Many of them fled their homes after fighting intensified following the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7 last year.
- Fleeing to Syria: Since Tuesday, nearly 24,500 people (over 6,600 Lebanese and nearly 17,900 Syrians) have crossed into Syria. Many of them do not have plans after they arrive, and Syria is setting up support for them.
- Gaza Situation: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that Hamas hasn't engaged in ceasefire talks recently, and there seems to be little interest from either side to end the conflict.
- Families of Hostages: Families of hostages held in Gaza expressed concern that the Israel-Hezbollah fighting could distract from their loved ones' situations. They criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for not addressing the hostages in his comments about Lebanon.
