Jemima Goldsmith, the ex-wife of Pakistan's former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has made serious accusations against the government led by Shehbaz Sharif. She claimed that Imran Khan is being held in solitary confinement, with the electricity in his jail cell cut off, and he is no longer allowed to make weekly phone calls to his sons.
Goldsmith’s claims came as Pakistan hosted a two-day SCO Summit in Islamabad, which attracted top leaders, including India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. The capital was heavily secured for the event. Before the summit, authorities arrested many of Khan’s supporters who tried to protest in Islamabad, demanding his release.
In a social media post on Tuesday, Goldsmith, who was married to Khan from 1995 to 2004, said that authorities have delayed all court hearings and stopped his friends and family from visiting him in jail.
Imran Khan has been in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi since his arrest on August 5, 2023. Goldsmith said that his weekly phone calls to their sons, Sulaiman and Kasim, who live in London, were stopped on September 10, despite a court order allowing them. She also reported that the authorities turned off the lights in his cell, and he is not allowed to leave or receive meals prepared by the jail cook. He is now in complete isolation, with no contact with anyone outside. His lawyers are worried about his health and safety.
Goldsmith also accused the government of mistreating Khan’s family to silence them and any political opposition. She said that Khan’s nephew, Hassan Niazi, has been in military custody since August 2023. Recently, his sisters, Uzma and Aleema Khan, were arrested while peacefully heading to a protest and are now in jail without a lawful reason.
Imran Khan, 72, was Pakistan’s Prime Minister from 2018 to 2022 until he was removed from office in a no-confidence vote after losing support from the military. He is currently facing many legal cases, with convictions in several of them.
