There has been a surprising controversy regarding Imane Khelif, the Algerian boxer who won gold in women’s boxing at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. A leaked medical report has raised questions about her gender identity. The report, obtained by French journalist Djaffar Ait Aoudia, states that Khelif has internal testicles and XY chromosomes, suggesting a condition known as 5-alpha reductase insufficiency.

The report was prepared by doctors from the Kremlin-Bicêtre Hospital in Paris and the Mohamed Lamine Debaghine Hospital in Algiers in June 2023. It details her biological characteristics, including the presence of internal testicles and the absence of a uterus. An MRI also indicated the presence of a micropenis.

This information is not new, as it was previously known that Khelif has XY chromosomes. In 2023, the International Boxing Association (IBA) had already banned her from competing in the World Championship Gold Medal fight in New Delhi because of these findings.

Massive outrage over Imane Khelif's leaked medical report

After the report was released, many users on X (formerly Twitter) criticized Imane Khelif. One user said, “Now arrest him on assault charges.” Another suggested that “Italian boxer Angela Carini should be given the gold medal.” A third user questioned, “How didn’t she even reach the quarterfinals?” while a fourth called for Khelif to make an apology in front of a large audience.

Piers Morgan also responded to the leaked French medical records that claim Khelif is a man.
