During his speech at the East Asia Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the need for talking instead of fighting, saying that solutions to global problems cannot be found on battlefields.
His comments come amid rising tensions in the Middle East and Eastern Europe due to conflicts involving Israel, Iran, and the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. PM Modi pointed out that these conflicts are negatively affecting countries in the Global South and stressed the importance of restoring peace and stability quickly.
While attending the ASEAN-India and East Asia summits in Laos to strengthen ties with ASEAN countries, he reiterated that diplomacy and peaceful solutions are essential. He mentioned, "I come from the land of Buddha, and I have repeatedly said this is not an era of war; solutions to problems cannot come from the battlefield."
He called for a humanitarian approach to conflicts and reaffirmed India's commitment to peace and diplomacy. "We need to prioritize dialogue and diplomacy while fulfilling our responsibility as global citizens. India will continue to contribute in every possible way," he said.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the increasing threat of terrorism, urging countries to work together to combat it. He said, "Terrorism is a serious challenge to global peace and security. To face it, people who believe in humanity must cooperate. We also need to strengthen our collaboration in areas like cyber security, maritime issues, and space."
Additionally, PM Modi called for a "free, open, inclusive, prosperous, and rule-based Indo-Pacific," reflecting India's concerns about China's aggressive actions in the region. He stressed that the peace and security of the South China Sea are crucial for the development of the Indo-Pacific, stating, "Our approach should focus on development, not expansion."
