Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Kazan on Tuesday for discussions. Modi arrived in Kazan to attend the 16th BRICS Summit.
In addition to meeting Putin, Modi is expected to talk with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other leaders from BRICS countries. He tweeted, "Landed in Kazan for the BRICS Summit. This is an important summit, and the discussions here will contribute to a better planet."
The Prime Minister was welcomed at the Kazan airport by Rustam Minnikhanov, the head of the Republic of Tatarstan. Before leaving for Russia, Modi stated that India values BRICS as an important platform for discussing global issues, including development, climate change, and economic cooperation.
This summit is taking place against the backdrop of ongoing global tensions, such as the Russia-Ukraine war and the crisis in the Middle East. India's Ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar, emphasized that India supports peace and believes that conflicts should be resolved through dialogue.
Last month, Putin referred to Modi as a "friend" and thanked India for its efforts toward a peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. This acknowledgment followed Modi's call to Putin for a quick end to the war. Modi also met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in August.
This visit marks Modi's second trip to Russia this year. In July, he attended the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit in Moscow, where he discussed various issues with Putin and received Russia's highest civilian honor, the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle.
On the eve of the BRICS Summit, India and China agreed to resume patrolling along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, signaling a positive step in their diplomatic relations. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri mentioned that they are still finalizing the timing for a potential meeting between Modi and Xi.
The two-day summit, themed "Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security," will serve as an important platform for leaders to address key global challenges and evaluate progress on initiatives launched by the nine-nation alliance while exploring future collaboration opportunities.
