At least two Chinese nationals were killed, and ten others were injured in a big explosion near Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, Pakistan, on Sunday, October 6.
According to the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan, the blast occurred at 11 p.m. (local time) when a tanker exploded outside the airport. The embassy expressed condolences to the injured and their families and said they have launched an emergency plan. They asked Pakistan to investigate the attack thoroughly, punish those responsible, and take steps to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens and projects in the country.
The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a banned group, claimed responsibility for the "suicide bombing," stating it targeted a convoy of Chinese engineers and investors arriving at the airport. The BLA also released a photo of the suicide bomber, identified as Sarmachar Shah Fahd, alias Aftab, who was part of their Majeed Brigade.
Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanjar told Geo News that the explosion was likely caused by an improvised explosive device (IED), and one foreigner was also injured.
Residents across Karachi heard the blast and saw smoke rising from the area. Injured individuals were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Footage showed smoke and a large fire near the blast site, which was on the road leading out of the airport.
Earlier this year, another suicide bombing killed five Chinese nationals and a local person in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province when a bomber targeted a convoy of Chinese engineers. Chinese workers are involved in many projects in Pakistan, with significant investments under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
