At least 60 people were killed after a boat capsized in Nigeria's northern Niger state, primarily carrying women and children returning from a religious festival. The incident occurred earlier this week, according to local officials.

The wooden boat was transporting nearly 300 passengers when it sank on Tuesday night in the River Niger, near the Gbajibo Community. Jibril Abdullahi Muregi, the chairman of the Mokwa local government area, reported that about 160 people have been rescued so far. Rescue operations are still ongoing to find more survivors and provide assistance to those affected.

As of now, the exact reason for the boat’s sinking is unclear. However, overcrowding and poor maintenance are common causes of boat accidents on Nigeria's waterways. Such tragedies highlight the dangers of inadequate safety measures in transporting large numbers of people.

This tragic event has raised concerns about the safety of passengers on boats, especially during busy periods like religious festivals when many people travel. Local officials are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident to prevent similar incidents in the future. As rescue operations continue, the focus remains on helping the victims’ families and ensuring that those rescued receive the necessary medical care and support.
