Alia Bhatt's Dussehra release, *Jigra*, directed by Vasan Bala, hit theaters on October 11. The film also marks the Bollywood debut of actor Vedang Rana. Despite strong marketing and Alia Bhatt's star power, *Jigra* is expected to have an average start at the box office.
The movie is a prison-break action thriller, a genre that doesn't always attract large audiences in India right away. Unless it receives strong word-of-mouth support, which will become clear by the end of the day, *Jigra* is likely to earn a single-digit figure on its first day.
Produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, the film is expected to make around Rs 5 crore on its opening day. While this is a decent start for a movie of this genre, especially post-pandemic, positive word-of-mouth could boost its earnings. The Dussehra festive weekend could also help improve ticket sales.
If all goes well and the film receives good feedback, it could earn Rs 20-25 crore during its first weekend. However, the true test will come on Monday, which will determine its long-term success before the big Diwali releases hit theaters.
*Jigra* also faces competition from *Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Vala Video*, starring Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri. Both films have a three-week window to perform at the box office and win over audiences.
